Learn How to Crochet – Single Crochet Stitch

Welcome Back, Crochet Friends

Hi everyone, and welcome back to our crochet learning series!
In our last post, we learned how to make a slip knot and chain stitch — the foundation of every crochet project.

Now that you can confidently create a chain, it’s time to move on to the next step: learning how to crochet the Single Crochet Stitch (SC). This simple stitch is perfect for beginners and is used in countless patterns, from blankets and beanies to bags and teddies.

 What You’ll Need

You’ll use the same materials as before:

  • Wool or yarn (medium-weight/8ply yarn is easiest for beginners)
  • Crochet hook (size recommended on your yarn label)

Optional: A pair of scissors and a yarn needle for finishing off your project later.

✨ Step 1: Start with a Foundation Chain

Begin with a chain made from the previous tutorial.
For practice, make a 12 chain, its a good length to start with.

✨ Step 2: How to Crochet a Single Crochet (SC)

Now let’s start crocheting your first row!

Instructions:

  1. Insert your hook into the second chain from your hook.
  2. Yarn over (wrap the yarn over your hook).
  3. Pull the yarn through the chain, you now have two loops on your hook.
  4. Yarn over hook, and pull through both loops on your hook.
  5. You’ve just made your first single crochet stitch! 🎉
  6. Repeat steps 1–4 in each chain till end of the row.

✨ Step 3: Starting a New Row

When you reach the end of your first row:

  1. Chain 2 – this gives your work height for the next row.
  2. Turn your work around.
  3. Insert your hook into the first single crochet and repeat the 1-4 steps in step 2 how to make a single crochet.

Keep repeating this process to build up rows — this is how you make solid crochet fabric!
